A spectacular array of Alaska wildflowers is softly lit by the morning warmth of this peaceful sunrise. Fireweed was so named because of its habit of growing rampantly through recently burned areas, and it has now spread throughout most of Alaska.
Alaskans have a saying... "When the fireweed is through blooming, summer is over and winter is on its way." The saying is true, so the sight of the lovely full bloom of fireweed is tempered by the knowledge that winter is not far off.
