"Miners named many of the creeks and rivers during the gold rush days in America. The streams were sometimes named after the prospector who first discovered gold there, or after some quirk or formation nearby. This creek was named 'Last Chance' because the prospector was about to run out of supplies and needed to head back to civilization, but he took one last chance to strike gold.

The charging bear gives a more sinister meaning to the name... Last Chance Creek."
